Best Players In the NFL DRAFT Sometimes Fly Under the Radar

by Guest blogger Smokin’ Jim Frazier

Ernie Banks “Mr. Cub” used to say with a gleam in his eye, “Let’s play two.”  As poor as the recent Pittsburgh Steelers drafts have been getting two good draft picks might not have seem like such a bad idea.
One of the best players in this draft is flying so low under the radar that he might be available in the 3rd or 4th round. Georgia Tech’s receiver Darren Waller (Wide-receiver/ Tight end/ H-back) is a freak of nature!!!  He is 6’6 and weighs 240 pounds and runs the forty in a sizzling 4.4!  He compares favorably to NFL super stars Jimmy Graham and Antonio Gates. Like Waller, Gates and Graham flew under the radar, Gates did not get drafted and entered the NFL as a rookie free agent and Graham was only a 3rd round draft choice and both are having NFL Hall of Fame careers.
Georgia Tech runs a triple option wish bone offense and runs the football 90% of the time.  But, Waller has everything it takes to be a star in the NFL.  He is strong and can shrug defenders off after the catch and has soft hands.  Great blocker and is accustomed to blocking not just on the perimeter, but also in tight or reduced formations. He’s a big play receiver who averaged 22 yards per catch in 2013 and caught 6 touchdowns in 2014. Georgia Tech is a running team and has a running quarterback and I don’t care if your Jerry Rice, Lynn Swann, Randy Moss or Antonio Brown you still need a good triggerman that can deliver the football in your general area code. The NFL has never seen a 6’6 tight end with Waller’s speed and he will be a defensive back or linebacker worst nightmare.
The Pittsburgh Steelers should draft this kid in the 3rd round.  He could be the biggest steal in the draft since they selected Antonio Brown in the 6th round of the 2010 draft. If the Steelers need some more incentive.  Waller, was suspended the first two games of the 2014 season for violation of team rules. He now has enough street cred to fit in with the current group wearing Black and Gold.
